New Delhi, Capital markets regulator Sebi on Monday settled proceedings against BofA Securities India Ltd after the merchant banker paid Rs 58.5 lakh towards the settlement amount in a case related to alleged violation of insider trading norms. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) initiated adjudication proceedings against BofA Securities India for the alleged violation of provisions of the Prohibition of Insider Trading (PIT) regulations and Merchant Bankers rules. According to Sebi, it was alleged that BofA Securities India, being a merchant banker, failed to maintain the Structured Digital Database (SDD) as prescribed under PIT regulations. Thereafter, a show-cause notice (SCN) was issued by Sebi to the merchant banker on May 26, 2025, for the alleged violations. Subsequently, BofA Securities India Ltd (Applicant) filed a settlement application with Sebi on July 1, 2025, proposing to settle the instant proceedings initiated against it, "without admitting or denying the findings of facts and conclusions of law. Sebi's High Powered Advisory Committee recommended that the matter be settled upon payment of Rs 58.50 lakh, which was later approved by the regulator's panel of whole-time members. Accordingly, BofA Securities India Ltd paid the settlement amount, and the remittance of the same was confirmed by Sebi on May 4, 2026.

The case is part of a global legal battle between the fast-growing rivals, with potential implications for platform practices, supplier relationships and the enforcement of intellectual property rights across global e-commerce. Shein alleges Temu used thousands of its photos to advertise copies of Shein's own-brand clothing on its website, to "piggy-back" on a more established competitor. "This was an attempt to steal a march on an existing participant in the market and Temu has sought to obtain, we say, an unfair advantage," Shein's lawyer Benet Brandreth said. TEMU COUNTER-CLAIM OVER REMOVED PRODUCTS Brandreth told the court Temu has dropped its defence to Shein's copyright claims over nearly 2,300 photos taken by Shein employees, likening it to "the defendant waiting to see if the witnesses will turn up, only to plead guilty". Temu - owned by PDD Holdings - has counter-claimed, seeking damages after it had to remove thousands of product listings when Shein obtained an injunction. It also alleges Shein broke competition law by tying fast-fashion suppliers to exclusive agreements. That part of the case is due to go to trial next year.

Chandigarh, The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday set aside the Centre's advisory against the release of ZEE5's docu-series and issued directions to its makers to remove references to "Lawrence" and "Punjab" from its title. The directions came on a plea by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, which had challenged the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's advisory. The petitioner's counsel Amit Jhanji said the bench of Justice Jagmohan Bansal quashed the Centre's advisory. He said that neither "Lawrence Bishnoi" nor "Punjab" would be used in the title of the docu-series, thus paving the way for its release. The court, which watched the docu-series, observed that it was not appearing to be glorifying any individual. The Centre had last month issued the advisory not to release the docu-series "Lawrence of Punjab", which was allegedly based on gangster Lawrence Bishnoi after the Punjab Police expressed apprehension that it poses a significant risk to public order. Punjab Advocate General M S Bedi had opposed the release of the docu-series, contending that it has the potential to negatively influence youth by normalising organised crime.

New Delhi, Markets regulator Sebi on Monday proposed allowing depositories to use up to 5 per cent of the interest or income earned from investments of their Investor Protection Fund (IPF) corpus to meet expenses related to the administration of the IPF Trust. The proposal aims to align the framework for depositories with the existing provisions applicable to stock exchanges. At present, stock exchanges are permitted to use a maximum of 5 per cent of the interest or income generated from IPF investments for meeting expenses related to dedicated employees of the IPF Trust, administration of Investor Service Centres, and other statutory and administrative expenses such as taxes, audit fees and charity commissioner fees. However, no such provision exists for depositories. Accordingly, in its consultation paper, Sebi said," To meet expenses related to dedicated employees of IPF Trust of the depository,other administrative and statutory expenses such as applicable taxes, audit fees and charity commissioner's fee, etc., subject to a maximum of 5 per cent of such interest or income from investments of the IPF during the year may be permitted to be utilized by the depository". Sebi suggested that if the expenses exceed the 5 per cent limit, the excess amount will have to be borne by the depository concerned. Further, if the permitted amount is not fully utilised during a financial year, the unspent portion will be ploughed back into the IPF corpus.
