The high court sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The Supreme Court's latest direction means Tejpal will have to surrender before serving the sentence, subject to any further orders in his appeal. The case relates to allegations that Tejpal sexually assaulted a junior colleague inside a hotel elevator in Goa in November 2013 during an event organised by Tehelka magazine.A Goa sessions court had acquitted Tejpal of all charges in May 2021, holding that the prosecution had failed to establish its case beyond reasonable doubt. The Goa government challenged the acquittal before the Bombay High Court, which overturned the trial court's verdict on August 6 and convicted Tejpal. The high court subsequently sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.Tejpal, through advocate Aditya Samaddar, moved the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court judgment. The Goa government has also approached the Supreme Court seeking a life sentence, arguing that the 10-year punishment was inadequate considering the nature and seriousness of the offences. The case dates back to November 2013, when a junior journalist accused Tejpal of sexually assaulting her inside an elevator at a five-star hotel in Goa.Tejpal…

Supreme Court notice to 20 rebel MPs in Trinamool's disqualification plea Supreme Court notice to 20 rebel MPs in Trinamool's disqualification plea The notice was issued on a writ petition by TMC MP and party's general secretary, Abhishek Banerjee, who has challenged the delay in the disqualification proceedings against the 20 parliamentarians by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday issued notices to 20 rebel Trinamool Congress MPs on a writ petition filed by the party's general secretary and Lok Sabha leader Abhishek Banerjee. He had sought directions from the court for an expeditious decision on the disqualification petitions pending before Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. However, no notice was issued to Birla, who has been arraigned as the first respondent in the petition, after Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stepped in and said he would appear on behalf of the Lok Sabha Speaker. The SG further said that he has instructions to say that Birla had issued notices on the disqualification petitions. The 20 MPs named as respondents in Banerjee's petition include Sayani Ghosh, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Satabdi Roy, Prasun Banerjee, Arup Chakraborty, Deepak Dev Adhikari and Yusuf Pathan, among others. The petition has challenged a delay in making a decision on the disqualification of the 20 rebel MPs. These leaders won the Assembly elections earlier this year on a TMC ticket but later defected to the relatively unknown Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) soon after the results were announced in May.

Delhi HC asks FSSAI to hold off on ITC licence action over ‘100% atta’

Delhi HC asks FSSAI to hold off on ITC licence action over ‘100% atta’ The Delhi High Court on Tuesday asked the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to hold off on any decision to cancel FMCG major ITC’s licence over its use of “100%” claims on its ITC Aashirvaad Shudh Chakki Atta product, while seeking the regulator’s response to the company’s plea. Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma issued notice to the FSSAI and other respondents on ITC’s petition challenging the regulator’s advisory on the use of “100%” claims on food products. The court will hear the matter next on September 9. The court said no decision regarding cancellation of ITC’s licence should be taken until the next hearing and asked the FSSAI to “hold its hands” in the meantime. As per its petition, ITC has termed the FSSAI advisory arbitrary, arguing that it goes beyond the regulator’s powers under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and bypasses the framework prescribed under the law. The company said food business operators are bound by the Act, its rules and regulations, and that the law does not provide for them to be bound by an advisory issued outside this framework. ITC has challenged the FSSAI’s May 28, 2025 advisory, which asked food business operators to discontinue the use of the term “100%” on food product labels, packaging and promotional material. The company has also challenged a show-cause notice issued on August 10 alleging violation of the advisory and an improvement notice issued on August 13, directing it to remove certain terms from its labels, advertisements and website and submit a compliance report within 15 days.
