Plea in Supreme Court to probe Cockroach Janta Party ‘activities’, fake law degrees A petition was filed on Sunday (May 24, 2026) in the Supreme Court to probe the “activities” of a “digital-political formation”, the Cockroach Janta Party, and the commercial exploitation, trademark appropriation and monetised circulation of oral remarks made in court proceedings. Opinion | Interpreting the ‘rise’ of the Cockroach Janta Party The petition filed by a Supreme Court advocate, Raja Choudhary, has arraigned the Union Government, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Bar Council of India, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as respondents in the case. Choudhary, represented by advocate Rajesh Singh Chouhan, said the petition was not an attack on fair criticism, democratic dissent, satire, and constitutionally protected free speech, but a challenge to organised commercial exploitation and distortion of solemn court hearings into a “viral spectacle” online. Judicial hearings and exchanges between judges and lawyers metamorphose into clipped fragments, outrage algorithms, trolling cultures, meme warfare, emotional mobilisation, and monetised virality, the petition said. “Isolated fragments of oral proceedings are selectively clipped, meme-ified, mimicked, commercially circulated, and transformed into viral digital content detached from constitutional and procedural context,” the petition said. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant’s reported remark on “cockroach” in reference to fake law degree holders during the hearing of a writ petition on May 15 spawned public furore and a viral online platform, the Cockroach Janta Party. The Chief Justice had clarified the following day in a statement that he was misquoted by sections of the media and had the greatest concern and respect for the youths of the country.

Delhi hotel fire: Punished for a guilty system

Delhi hotel fire: Punished for a guilty system It is 12 noon on June 3, a day surprisingly not as hot as Delhi can get at this time, but the water from the fire extinguishers has dried up. About 200 people are gathered in a narrow lane in South Delhi’s Hauz Rani, breathlessly recalling what had happened. The smoke has now cleared up over the six-storeyed Flourish Stay, a bed-and-breakfast, but the building is charred. Members of the fire brigade say that at least 49 people were pulled out of the building. “There was no emergency exit, the doors on the terrace were locked, and the glass façade made rescue difficult. In addition, the doors were powered by electricity, so could not be opened once the fire broke out.

‘Paraded in underwear, ropes tied to waist’: can’t humiliate accused, says Calcutta HC

‘Paraded in underwear, ropes tied to waist’: can’t humiliate accused, says Calcutta HC Expressing concern over parading accused persons in public with ropes tied around their waists, the Calcutta High Court on Friday (June 5, 2026) said the State has the authority to arrest and prosecute individuals but cannot subject them to humiliation. “You may arrest them, you may prosecute them but you cannot humiliate them,” said a Vacation Bench led by Justice Joy Sengupta and Justice Smita Das De. There have been several reports of accused persons being paraded not just with ropes but also in vest and underwear in Howrah, Kolkata and other parts of the State. The arrests, mostly of accused against whom several allegations of extortion have been made, have taken place after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power in the State. Most of those subjected to such treatment have several allegations against them and are perceived to be close to the Trinamool Congress. During the hearing of a plea challenging such behaviour meted out to the accused, the court said the police cannot deliberately defame the accused in the name of arrest. “The police... can take action according to the law. But they cannot deliberately defame the accused in the name of arrest,” the court observed. Questioning the circumstances under which the police are resorting to such a practice, the court has sought a report from the State. The government informed the court that the individuals are mainly accused of extortion and they are being taken to the spot to reconstruct the crime.

Indian mission in U.K. condemns disruption at Chief Justice Surya Kant event

Indian mission in U.K. condemns disruption at Chief Justice Surya Kant event The High Commission of India in London on Friday (June 5, 2026) issued a statement condemning the disruption caused at an event addressed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant during his ongoing visit to the U.K. Kant was addressing a lecture entitled ‘Artificial Intelligence and International Law’ at Birkbeck, University of London, on Thursday (June 4, 2026), which was followed by an audience interaction. The event explored the growing relationship between artificial intelligence, legal systems and international governance, examining both the opportunities and challenges AI presents for the future of justice and global regulation. “A lively discussion followed his address. Thereafter, a certain individual tried to disrupt the event,” reads the Indian High Commission statement, released on social media. “Such indecorous audience behaviour is unacceptable and inconsistent with respectful engagement that should govern public discourse. Differences of opinion are a natural part of a democratic society. However, they must be expressed in a manner that is civil and respectful,” it adds. The statement followed videos circulating online that reflect a heated exchange over an attempted audience question about “growing hostility to dissent within India”, which was cut short by the event moderator as being off the topic of AI and international law. “Technology itself is neither inherently benevolent nor inherently harmful. Its impact depends upon the legal, political, and ethical frameworks within which societies choose to deploy it,” Justice Kant said during his address. “The responsibility of law, therefore, is neither to resist technological progress nor to surrender unquestioningly before it.

The Obiter Truth: The broke lawyer

The Obiter Truth: The broke lawyer If you’ve seen her riding in an auto to court, trussed up in a big black coat in this sweltering heat, please don’t feel sorry for her. For she, the broke lawyer, is not a product of circumstance. She’s chosen to have car fumes play havoc with her hair as she flips through the judgment she pulled out at 6:00 AM and ignores the auto-wala’s complaints about the rising prices of fuel. It is faith. “I’ll argue it today”, she assures herself, mentally envisioning every question, objection, from the judge, the opposition, as she’s done countless times over the last six months, “and when I do, I’ll make it grand”. “But how will that make anything better?”, the voice in her head keeps asking, “one good order will not change your practice. And if you don’t have a hundred after ten years on the job, what is the point?!” The voice makes a good point. She would like to explain her motivations, even to herself. Not a thought, it was a feeling that got her into practice, and a feeling that keeps her here. If she’d thought it through, she’d have stuck to that first job in the well-lit law-firm where the snacks were free.
