Judicial ambitions, empty courtrooms: How a competitive exam has slowed Delhi’s trial courts On July 1, 2026, the Delhi High Court notified 27 vacant positions in the Delhi Higher Judicial Service (DHJS) under the direct recruitment quota, scheduling the preliminary examination for Sunday, July 26. Ordinarily, a judicial service examination attracts little public attention beyond those taking it. This year, however, the examination has had consequences that are already visible inside Delhi’s district courts, even before the first question paper is handed out. Across court complexes - from Patiala House and Saket to Tis Hazari, Rohini, Dwarka and Karkardooma - an unusually large number of judicial officers have proceeded on leave in the weeks leading up to the examination. In courtroom after courtroom, the presiding judicial officer is absent. And in a striking number of cases, that leave concludes on July 24 or July 25 - barely a day before the DHJS preliminary examination. There is nothing irregular about judicial officers availing earned leave, medical leave or child care leave. These are statutory entitlements available under the service rules.

Ram Temple donation theft row: UP govt reconstitutes SIT; IG Kiran S to lead probe NEW DELHI: Acting on the Supreme Court's directions, the Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior IPS officers to investigate the alleged embezzlement of devotees' offerings at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. The reconstituted team is headed by Inspector General Kiran S, with Deputy Inspector General Somen Verma and Ayodhya Senior Superintendent of Police Dr Gaurav Grover as members. It replaces the earlier SIT, which was headed by Lucknow Commissioner Vijay Vishwas Pant and included Special Secretary (Finance) Neel Ratan Kumar among its members. The apex court had, during a July 13 hearing, expressed the view that allegations involving theft and financial irregularities required investigation by experienced police officers. CJP Jantar Mantar Protest Updates A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohan directed the state to form a fresh SIT under a senior IPS officer and submit a status report by July 27. The case centres on allegations that offerings made by devotees at the Ram temple were siphoned off instead of being deposited through the prescribed process. Investigators probing the case earlier examined CCTV footage, donation registers, cash-handling records and financial documents, besides questioning temple staff. Their preliminary findings indicated suspected irregularities in the counting and deposit of donations.

'Rajesh Khanna wanted divorce from Dimple, but she refused,' says his partner

'Rajesh Khanna wanted divorce from Dimple, but she refused,' says his partner Rajesh Khanna was 31 when he married a much younger, 16-year old Dimple Kapadia in 1973. She left acting after marriage despite a huge hit like 'Bobby' as her debut. After having two daughters, Twinkle and Rinke Khanna, the duo separated. She moved out of his house in 1982 and they lived separately, till he passed away. Before he passed away, Rajesh Khanna was living with his partner Anita Advani who had filed a plea in Bombay High Court seeking recognition of her relationship with him. However, On April 1, 2026, the Bombay High Court dismissed Anita Advani’s appeal seeking to recognise her live-in relationship with the late actor as a valid marriage. The court observed that the relationship held the “character of a live-in relationship,” which did not satisfy the tests for a valid marriage under Marriage Act. Now in a recent interview, Advani has spoken about her case and relationship with Khanna.

District Legal Services Authority begins functioning in Vijayanagara

District Legal Services Authority begins functioning in Vijayanagara The newly constituted District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) of Vijayanagara district formally commenced operations on Saturday with the objective of providing speedy, free and accessible legal services to the public, particularly economically weaker and marginalised sections of society. Inaugurating the new office at the Principal District and Sessions Court complex in Hosapete, Pradeep Singh Yerur of the Karnataka High Court and administrative judge for Vijayanagara district said the establishment of a separate legal services authority for the district marked a significant step towards ensuring quicker access to justice. He noted that legal services for the region were earlier administered from the undivided Ballari district and said the new authority would enable people in Vijayanagara district to avail themselves of legal assistance more conveniently. Judge Yerur said the effective functioning of the judicial system depended not only on judges but also on lawyers, the police, the civil administration and litigants working together. Referring to the four pillars of democracy, the legislature, executive, judiciary and the media, he said each played an important role in upholding the rule of law. Stressing the need to make justice accessible to the last person in society, he said the district had a sizeable population of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, backward communities, farmers and labourers, for whom prolonged litigation could be financially burdensome. To address this, the authority has empanelled more than 64 advocates and para-legal volunteers to provide free legal aid, legal advice and assistance to eligible persons. Yerur said the authority would not remain confined to its office but would also take legal services to the people’s doorstep.
