Not essential religious practice: Allahabad High Court rejects Muslim student’s plea to wear hijab in school The Allahabad High Court recently rejected a Muslim student’s plea seeking directions to allow her to wear a headscarf, in addition to the uniform prescribed by her school [Sukaina Rizvi v State of UP and Others] A Division Bench of JJ Munir and Justice Indrajeet Shukla noted that high courts have been unanimous in their opinion that wearing a headscarf is not essential part of the Islamic faith for a woman. Pertinently, the Court also said that Karnataka High Court’s decision against wearing of hijabs in schools continues to hold the field as the Supreme Court is yet to settle the dispute after a split verdict “In view of the difference of opinion, the matter was directed to be placed before the Hon’ble the Chief Justice for the constitution of an appropriate Bench. There is no authoritative pronouncement as yet by the Supreme Court, finally settling the issue, arising from the judgment of the Karnataka Full Bench. We are of opinion that the Karnataka Full Bench, like the other Courts, is nevertheless persuasive authority of great value and there is no reason for us to take a different view,” it noted. The Court refused to accept the petitioner’s argument that wearing a headscarf was an essential religious practice for her. There is no pleading or authoritative religious text or material placed on record, sufficient by itself to establish, that the practice about the obligation to wear a scarf inside the classroom, is obligatory and the non-observance thereof would alter the fundamental character of the petitioner's faith, the Court said. “A claim, placing reliance upon Article 25 of the Constitution, cannot be accepted for the sake of mere assertion, without the necessary factual and legal foundation laid for the purpose.

US midterm elections: Supreme Court backs Trump administration over mail-in ballot

US midterm elections: Supreme Court backs Trump administration over mail-in ballot The US Supreme Court on Monday (local time) backed President Donald Trump's executive order restricting mail-in voting. However, it remains unclear how much of the order can be implemented before the upcoming midterm elections, scheduled for November. According to a CNN report, although the court described its decision as limited, the ruling creates new uncertainty over voting rules for the midterm elections. It also leaves open the possibility that Trump could eventually implement policies outlined in his March order, which gave the US Postal Service (USPS) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) unprecedented roles in administering elections. The Supreme Court’s 10-page unsigned order, issued over the objections of its three liberal justices, could allow the Trump administration to proceed with a plan for DHS to create state-by-state lists of voters it considers eligible in Democratic-led states that had challenged the proposal in court. Trump’s order also sought to give the USPS greater authority over states that use mail-in ballots. Under the proposal, states would have to provide USPS with lists of eligible voters and include tracking information on ballot envelopes. The Supreme Court allowed USPS to proceed with this part of the plan, but a lower court has separately blocked its nationwide implementation.

Youth Morcha storms DM office highlighting critical gaps in schools, questions FIR on activist

Youth Morcha storms DM office highlighting critical gaps in schools, questions FIR on activist Activists of Justice Morcha, a forum of youths pushing the issues of employment and education in Uttar Pradesh, on Monday (August 24, 2026) reached the District Magistrate (DM) office in Deoria, demanding improvement of critical gaps in basic school infrastructure The group reached the administration after a case was filed against one of its members, Rajat Singh, for showing the poor condition of government schools on camera in Deoria. “Many activists of the Justice Morcha reached the office of DM Deoria. A case was filed against our colleague Rajat for showing the poor condition of government schools on camera. Today, when Rajat and his colleagues reached the District Magistrate’s office regarding this matter, the District Magistrate immediately left the office,” said Abhinav Mishra, who claims to be associated with the forum. “We are only demanding improvement of critical gaps in basic school infrastructure. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claims that the picture of government schools has changed. If the picture of schools has really changed, then why are cases being filed to show the ground reality? Is the Kayakalp scheme also running only on paper? If officials are looting public money under the nose of the Chief Minister, then who will take responsibility for it,” he asked. Singh, a member of the group, on charges of entering a primary school in Gauribazar’s Damar Bishwa village without authorisation and spreading misinformation.

US Supreme Court backs Trump on mail voting order, legality still open

US Supreme Court backs Trump on mail voting order, legality still open US Supreme Court backs Trump on mail voting order, legality still open The US Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to move ahead with its mail voting order for now. The ruling rests on standing, leaving the order's legality and timing before the midterms uncertain. The US Supreme Court on Monday sided with the Trump administration in a case over President Donald Trump’s executive order restricting mail-in voting, though it is still unclear how much of the order can be put in place before the fast-approaching midterm elections. The ruling also leaves scope for fresh legal challenges that could delay the order further, even as some states are only weeks away from sending mail ballots to voters. The court’s conservative majority did not rule on whether Trump’s order is legal. Instead, it said the states that challenged it did not have the legal right to do so. In an unsigned order, the majority said, “The Court’s disposition of this application does not mean that any measure taken by the Government to implement the Order will necessarily be lawful. On that score, time will tell.” The court’s three liberal-leaning justices dissented.
